Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to common questions about therapy, assessments, and our practice.
Getting Started
Questions about beginning therapy and what to expect.
Therapy can be beneficial for anyone experiencing emotional distress, facing difficult life transitions, wanting to improve relationships, or seeking personal growth. If you're wondering whether therapy might help, a consultation can provide clarity. There's no minimum threshold of suffering required to benefit from therapy.
Psychiatrists focus on biological, medical aspects of mental illness, prescribing medication and diagnosing. Psychologists provide in-depth testing, diagnostics, and evidenced-based therapy, but generally can't prescribe. Psychotherapists use talk therapy to treat and emotional and behavioral issues, focusing on coping strategies.
You can contact us via email to schedule an initial consultation. We'll ask some basic questions about your needs, answer your questions about our services, and find a time that works for your schedule. No referral is needed to schedule an appointment.
The first session is primarily focused on getting to know you and understanding what brings you to therapy. We'll discuss your current concerns, relevant history, goals for therapy, and answer any questions you have about the process. We'll also review confidentiality and administrative details. This session helps us determine together whether our practice is a good fit for your needs.
The Therapy Process
Understanding how therapy works and what happens in sessions.
The duration of therapy varies based on individual needs and goals. Some people benefit from short-term focused work over a few months, while others find value in longer-term therapy lasting a year or more. We regularly review progress together and adjust the treatment plan as needed. You're never locked into continuing—therapy ends when you feel ready.
Most clients begin with weekly sessions. As therapy progresses and you're meeting your goals, sessions may be spaced to biweekly or monthly. The frequency depends on your needs, the severity of concerns, and what works best for your schedule and progress.
Sessions are collaborative conversations focused on your goals. You'll discuss what's been happening since the last session, explore patterns in thoughts and behaviors, process difficult experiences, learn new skills, and work toward changes you want to make. The specifics vary based on your needs and the therapeutic approach being used.
It's important to communicate if therapy doesn't feel helpful. We regularly check in about progress and what's working, but if you have concerns between those check-ins, please bring them up. Sometimes adjusting our approach or addressing what isn't working becomes the most valuable work we do. If our practice isn't the right fit, we can discuss referrals to other providers.
Practical Questions
Information about fees, insurance, scheduling, and logistics.
We accepts coverage through most third party insurance providers that cover either psychotherapy and/or assessment services.
Fees vary based on the type of service. Individual therapy sessions are billed at our standard rate, while psychological assessments involve different fee structures depending on the complexity of the evaluation. We discuss all fees during the initial consultation before you commit to services. We also offer a limited number of reduced-fee slots for those with financial need.
We require 24 hours' notice for cancellations or rescheduling. Appointments cancelled with less than 24 hours' notice or missed without contact may be subject to a cancellation fee. We understand that emergencies happen and handle those situations with flexibility.
Yes, we offer secure video sessions for clients who prefer remote care or cannot attend in person. Telehealth can be just as effective as in-person therapy for many concerns. We use encrypted, privacy-compliant platforms to ensure your confidentiality in accordance with PHIPA standards.
Our office is located at 720 Walker Rd., Windsor, ON N8Y2N3. We offer appointments throughout the week, including some evening and weekend slots to accommodate different schedules. Specific availability varies, and we'll work with you to find times that fit your needs.
Confidentiality & Privacy
Understanding how your information is protected.
Yes, confidentiality is a cornerstone of therapy. What you share in sessions is protected by law and professional ethics. There are a few important exceptions: if there's concern about imminent risk of harm to yourself or others, suspected child or elder abuse, or if records are court-ordered. We'll review confidentiality fully in your first session.
We will not share information with anyone without your explicit written consent. If you'd like us to coordinate care with your physician or another provider, we can do so with your permission. Many clients find integrated care helpful, and we're happy to collaborate with other professionals on your treatment team.
Psychological Assessments
Common questions about the assessment process.
Therapy focuses on treatment and change—working through difficulties, building skills, and supporting your well-being. Psychological assessment focuses on evaluation and understanding—answering specific diagnostic questions, identifying cognitive strengths and weaknesses, or clarifying what treatment approaches might be most effective. Both can be valuable, and sometimes they're used together.
The total process typically takes 4-6 weeks from initial consultation to feedback session. This includes the clinical interview, testing sessions (usually 3-6 hours total), scoring and interpretation time, report writing, and the feedback session. Rush services may be available when needed.
Insurance coverage for assessment varies significantly by plan and the reason for testing. Some plans cover diagnostic assessments but not educational or neuropsychological testing. We recommend calling your insurance company to verify coverage before scheduling. We can provide detailed information to help you check your benefits.
Yes, you will receive a comprehensive written report of your assessment findings. This report belongs to you, and you can share it with other providers, schools, or use it for accommodation requests as needed. We also provide a detailed feedback session to review the findings with you.
